Job Description: LIBRARY PAGE Circulation Services
Job Type: Part time; high-school student position
Typical Responsibilities
Under the immediate supervision of the circulation supervisor, reshelves library materials, maintains materials in the library collection in a neat and orderly fashion, assists in other support tasks as assigned. The work is often routine but requires attention to detail.
Essential functions:
- Performs alpha-numeric sorting and filing tasks.
- Arranges returned materials on book cart and reshelves them in proper order.
- Shelf reads and straightens materials on the shelves. Assists with maintaining the appearance of shelves.
- Empties book drop and takes returned items to the proper place for checking in at Circulation Desk.
- Answers directional questions and refers non-directional questions to the appropriate staff.
- Assists with programming as needed, including outreach programming, set-up, and tear down.
- Assists with creating and/or maintaining library displays.
- Assists with weeding and withdrawing materials.
- Performs light housekeeping.
- Works on other projects as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Abilities:
- Ability to communicate effectively with staff and public; ability to maintain a courteous working relationship with other staff, the public, and supervisors.
- Ability to follow detailed spoken and written directions.
- Ability to maintain a regular work schedule.
- Ability to perform moderately heavy physical work.
- Ability to sort effectively in alphabetic or numeric order, including being able to develop a working understanding of the Dewey Decimal System.
- Ability to learn and apply basic library procedures.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally.
Environmental/Working Conditions
- The work for this position is mostly indoors, though rarely work may be outdoors (e.g., during programming or special events).
- The regular shift for this part-time position is two hours a day, two or three days per week. Rarely the position may require more hours in one day (e.g., to cover programming or special events). The Library is willing to be flexible with school and extracurricular activities.
This work requires the following physical abilities
- Ability to work in confined spaces.
- Ability to bend, twist, and reach high and low.
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, climb, stoop, kneel and crouch.
- Good distance vision at 20 feet or further and near vision at 20 inches or less.
- Ability to use wrists, hands, and fingers for long periods to do following activities: filing, sorting, shelving, processing, cutting paper, and other assigned tasks.
- Ability to handle materials for processing, picking up, and shelving.
- Ability to perform moderately heavy physical work, including carrying 50 pounds or less; ability to push and pull a full book cart on wheels.
Equipment Used
- Book cart for transporting materials to proper areas for reshelving
- Common office and classroom items such as scissors, stapler, art supplies
- May help with kits and items used in programming (e.g., giant tinker toys, connect four, puzzles, etc.)
- May use a computer (e.g., to help with summer reading, programs, etc.)
Required Education and Experience:
- Education equivalent to a junior or senior in high school.
- Must be at least fifteen years old and eligible for a work permit (if older than fifteen years old, no work permit is required).
Desired Education and Experience:
- A familiarity with computers and smart phones in order to help with programming and collection needs.
